Voting Information

To qualify as a resident elector for the City of Port Moody, a person must, at the time of voting, be:

• age 18 or older on or before general voting day
• a Canadian citizen
• a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before the day of registration
• a resident of the City of Port Moody
• not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any enactment from voting in an election, or otherwise disqualified by law

Register to vote in the 2026 Port Moody election

You may register at the time of voting at a voting location on General Voting Day or at one of the Advance Voting Opportunities.

The City uses the Provincial Voters List. If you are on the Provincial Voters List for Port Moody (i.e. you are already registered to vote in previous provincial elections in B.C.), then you are already registered to vote in the Port Moody election.

Registration documents

If you are not on the list of registered electors at the time of voting, you will need to present two documents that provide evidence of your identity and place of residence, at least one of which must include your signature. Examples of acceptable forms of IDs include:

• B.C. driver’s licence
• B.C. services card, B.C. CareCard, or Gold CareCard
• BCID card
• Owner’s certificate of insurance and vehicle licence issued by ICBC
• Social insurance number card
• Citizenship card or certificate
• Birth certificate
• Canadian passport
• Property tax notice
• Utility bill
• Debit or credit card or statement issued by a financial institution
• Student ID card
• Government-issue documents such as cheque stub, pension plan benefits statement, Old Age Security statement
• Income tax assessment notice
• Canadian Forces identification
• a document issued by the Government of Canada that certifies that the applicant is registered under the Indian Act (Canada), such as a status card
• a citizenship or membership card issued by a First Nation
• a citizenship card issued by Métis Nation British Columbia

If you own real property in Port Moody but do not reside in the city, you may still vote in the General Local Election if you meet the requirements below at the time of voting: 

• registered as a non-resident property elector in the City of Port Moody
• not eligible to register as a resident elector in Port Moody
• a Canadian citizen
• 18 years of age or older on the day of registration or General Voting Day
• a resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration
• a registered owner of real property in the City of Port Moody for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration
• registered owners of the real property are individuals (not owners on behalf of a corporation or a trust) 
• not disqualified from voting by any enactment or law

Non-Resident Property Electors will register to vote directly with the City of Port Moody. Please contact the Election Office at elections@portmoody.ca to register to vote as a non-resident property elector. You may only register as a non-resident property elector in relation to one parcel of real property.

If the property has more than one owner, only one owner may vote in relation to the property. The voter must have written consent from a majority of the other registered owners. To vote as a non-resident property elector, you need to bring identification and required forms to one of the following:

• any voting location of your choice on Advance or General Voting Day;
• the Election Office to register in advance (by appointment). We are located on the first floor at Port Moody City Hall, 100 Newport Drive.

Required documents:

• Application for registration as a non-resident property elector (PDF) – This form must have your signature and be witnessed by another individual, who will also sign and provide their residential address. 
• Non-registered property elector consent form (PDF) – This form must be signed by a majority of the registered owners of the property (if the property has more than one owner).
• Proof of property ownership (photocopy accepted), such as property tax notice, assessment notice or certificate of title.
• Two pieces of valid ID that prove your identity (one of which must include your signature).

Per the provincial School Act, non-resident property owners living in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, the Village of Anmore, and the Village of Belcarra are not eligible to vote in the School Trustee race in the City of Port Moody. They are only eligible to vote for the School Trustee candidates running in their jurisdiction of residence.
