Recreation Inclusion

Access and Inclusion in Recreation

We are committed to making recreation accessible for everyone in our community. This includes financial assistance through the Leisure Access Program (see the dropdown below for details), and inclusion support for participants with disabilities who may need extra help to take part in programs.

Support for People with Disabilities

Participants who need additional support are welcome to bring their own support person to help them fully enjoy their recreation experience throughout the year. Families are encouraged to make these arrangements to ensure their loved ones feel confident and supported in our programs. For assistance or to confirm your arrangements, please email recreationinclusion@portmoody.ca at least two weeks before the program begins.

Summer 2026 Camp Support

Inclusion and Support in Summer Day Camps

Each summer, Recreation Inclusion staff work to support children and youth with disabilities or additional needs in select summer day camps.

Support staff may assist with:

  • Adapting activities
  • Providing verbal prompts and redirection
  • Encouraging participation
  • Supporting social and emotional wellbeing

While staff typically have experience providing inclusion support, they are not trained behavioural interventionists or community support workers.

Requesting Support for Summer Camps

If your child has a disability or behavioural concerns and requires support to be successful in camp, please follow these steps:

  1. Indicate Support Needs During Registration
When registering for camp, select “Yes” to the question:
“Does your child have a disability and require support to be successful in camp?”
If your child has a support person at school, it is recommended that you answer “yes.”

  2. Respond to the Follow-Up Email
After registration, you will receive an email from the Recreation Inclusion team requesting additional information.
Please reply no later than Friday, May 29, 2026 to be considered for support.

Important Notes About Summer Camp Support

  • Support availability
Support spots are limited each week and are not guaranteed. Respond to the follow-up email as soon as possible after registering.

  • Confirmation process
Replying to the follow-up email is considered a request for support. You will receive a separate confirmation email if support is approved for the requested week.

  • Limits
If approved, each child or youth may receive a maximum of one week of support during the summer.

  • Support types
Depending on individual needs, support may be:

    • One-on-one
    • Shared
    • Volunteer-based

  • Priority & Support Parameters
Inclusion support is available to Port Moody residents and is subject to staffing availability and our support parameters. Our ability to accommodate support requests may depend on the following factors:
    • Behavioural support limits
Support may not be available for behaviours that are outside the scope of what recreation staff can safely support, including physical or verbal aggression, running from the group, or other behaviours that could place staff or participants at risk.

    • Personal care needs
Recreation staff are unable to provide physical assistance with personal care tasks, including feeding, changing, toileting, lifts and transfers, or medication administration.

If a participant’s support needs exceed what recreation staff can safely provide, we encourage families to connect with us to explore alternate options. Families are always welcome to provide their own support person so their child can still attend programs and camps.

Bringing Your Own Support Person

Families are welcome to provide their own support person so their child can still participate in camp.
If you plan to do so, please email recreationinclusion@portmoody.ca at least two weeks before the camp begins.
