Community Planning

Through strategic community planning, we work to shape a healthy, happy, thriving city. When planning for the future, we consider the social, cultural, economic, and environmental needs of our community. This can include planning affordable housing, creating new programs and services, and supporting economic development that meets the needs of the community. Our biennial Community Satisfaction Survey consistently shows that perceptions of the quality of life in Port Moody is overwhelmingly positive. In 2024, 94% of residents rated the quality of life as either ‘very good’ (34%) or ‘good’ (60%)!

Two key planning tools we use to achieve these goals include the City’s Official Community Plan (OCP) and the Zoning Bylaw. The OCP is our long-term vision for the City and provides policies to guide land use, services, and the physical, social, and economic changes in our community. The Zoning Bylaw divides the City into zones, and each one has a list of permitted uses and rules about how properties within it may be developed. All development and land use must follow the guidelines presented in the OCP and Zoning Bylaw. Other planning tools we use include the Housing Action Plan to address housing gaps and needs in Port Moody and the Heritage Strategic Plan to direct heritage planning and protection.
