Be prepared to evacuate or shelter in place

Depending on the location or nature of the emergency, you may be required to leave your home to go somewhere safer, or shelter-in-place, staying inside until things outside become safe again.

In the event of an evacuation, emergency officials will notify the public in a variety of ways, such as social media, loudspeakers, sirens, or door knocking. Make sure you have your grab-and-go bags ready, and you know your personal plan for getting to safety.

Read more about emergency evacuee guidance.

In the case of a hazardous material emergency, you may be urged to shelter-in-place. Learn more about what you should do in these situations involving hazardous material spills and sheltering in place.
