Statement from the Mayor's Office on the passing of former mayor John Northey

The City of Port Moody was saddened to learn that former mayor John Northey passed away on October 17, 2026 at the age of 91. On behalf of Port Moody, Mayor Meghan Lahti extends deepest sympathies to Mr. Northey’s family, friends, and the many people who knew and worked with him over the years.
Mr. Northey served as an alderman (councillor) from 1972 to 1974 and as Port Moody’s mayor from 1993 to 1996. During his time as mayor, the new city hall and library building was completed and Council decided to renovate and preserve the old city hall as the Arts Centre. At a Council meeting in 2013, the City’s centennial year, Mr. Northey spoke about his time as mayor with great pride and with gratitude for the work of the councils and staff who came before him and paved the way for future projects of benefit to the community.
Flags at City facilities, already lowered in recognition of the recent tragedy at CFB Wainwright in Alberta, will remain lowered until sunset on Friday, October 23, 2026 to honour Mr. Northey and his contributions to the community.
