Coming soon: EVENTS & VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES 2025
Environment
Situated on Burrard Inlet and surrounded by forested mountains, Port Moody has a beautiful natural environment. Living in a city surrounded by wilderness means that we need to take extra precautions to develop with care around Environmentally Sensitive Areas, manage wildlife interactions, remove invasive plants, and help protect streams and the marine environment.

Have you ever paused to consider the diverse wildlife that thrives in Port Moody? This October, we're taking a moment to appreciate our flying neighbours – the bats. As a certified bat-friendly community, Port Moody is committed to the bat habitat conservation and education. In fact, our area is a safe haven for around nine species of bats, including the endangered Little Brown Myotis or ‘Little Brown Bat.’
Port Moody's natural areas like the Shoreline Trail and Westhill Park are not just great places to explore, but also vital habitats for these creatures. Bats play a crucial role in our ecosystem, helping to control insect populations, including mosquitoes. As the colder months approach, these fascinating animals either take flight to new places or settle down for a winter's hibernation.
Our commitment to bats extends beyond just appreciation. We encourage you to join us in supporting bats by taking steps in your daily life. Simple actions such as landscaping with bat-friendly plant species, reducing bright outdoor lights at night, and removing invasive plants like Burdock, which can trap bats, can make a big difference. Want to learn about bats in a fun way? Pick up a Bat Pack that includes bat resources and an acoustic bat-detector from the Port Moody Public Library.
We invite you to learn more and become a part of this conservation effort. For more information on how you can coexist harmoniously with our nocturnal neighbours, please visit (Bats accordion folded out on wildife page). Together, we can foster a community where both people and bats thrive.
