Second-annual Car-Free Day celebration in Port Moody draws more than 25,000 people

More than 25,000 people enjoyed Port Moody’s second-annual Car-Free Day, a community celebration that included more than 120 booths presented by local businesses, artisans, and non-profit groups. 

The City of Port Moody closed a section of St. Johns Street for the event, which lasted from 12 noon to 7pm on Sunday, August 19, 2018. 

“Thank you to our local businesses and artisans, our local residents, and the visitors who came from around the Lower Mainland – you all helped to make Car-Free Day an unbelievable success,” says Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay. “It was great to see St. John’s Street come alive with so many people. We have an amazing community here, and it was wonderful to see everyone enjoying all that Port Moody has to offer.”

Car-Free Day featured:

• live music, including classic reggae band Mostly Marley, Clavinova Nights, who perform jazz music with a blend of blues and upbeat dance music, and Hicklestock, a Tri-Cities band made up of 14-year-old Luka on drums, 14-year-old Enzo on bass guitar, 13-year-old Niko on guitar, and 11-year-old Diego on keys and lead vocals;
• great food, available from local restaurants and food trucks;
• Brewers Row Beer Garden (family friendly) at Queens Street Plaza;
• family-friendly activities, like parkour (obstacle course), rock climbing, street hockey, face painting, a mini train, and a bicycle skills and safety zone;
• roving entertainers and mascots;
• more than 120 booths presented by local businesses and artisans; and
• electric vehicle and electric bicycle displays.

Car-free days take place across the country and aim to inspire people to get out of their cars, interact with each other, and explore alternative modes of transportation.
