More than 20,000 people enjoyed Port Moody’s first-ever Car-Free Day, a community celebration that included over 100 booths presented by local businesses, artisans, and non-profit groups.

The City of Port Moody closed a section of St. Johns Street for the event, which lasted from 12 noon to 7pm on Sunday, August 20, 2017.

“Car-Free Day was an unbelievable success,” says Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay. “It was so great to see the community out celebrating with our local businesses and having a great time. Our businesses and artisans really outdid themselves, and I thank them for their significant contribution to the success of this inaugural event.

“I would also like to say a huge thank you to our amazing staff and volunteers, who worked so hard all day long, and to our sponsors, who made Car-Free Day possible,” continues Clay. “Thank you to Onni, Bold Edgestone, Hard Rock Casino, Open Road Auto Group, Cap's Westwood Cycle, Jack FM, and Global Television for your generous support. I can’t wait for next year!”

Car-Free Day featured:

  • live music, including folk-rock artist Greg Drummond, and The Rhythm Method, an eight-piece R&B, funk, pop, and rock band that plays hits from the ’60s right through to today;
  • great food, available from local restaurants;
  • Brewers Row Beer Garden at Queens Street Plaza;
  • family-friendly activities, like rock climbing, street hockey, face painting, and a bicycle skills and safety zone;
  • roving entertainers and mascots;
  • more than 100 booths presented by local businesses and artisans; and
  • electric vehicle demonstrations.

Please visit the City of Port Moody’s Facebook page to view our Car-Free Day photo album. The City invites members of the public to fill out a feedback form. The feedback collected will help the City plan for the second annual Port Moody Car-Free Day, coming in summer 2018.

Car-free days take place across the country and aim to inspire people to get out of their cars, interact with each other, and explore alternative modes of transportation.
