E-scooter/e-bike sharing coming to Port Moody in August to increase access to greener travel options
In time for the City’s Car-Free Day event on August 17, 2025, Port Moody residents and visitors aged 16 or older will have access to shared electric scooters and electric bicycles throughout most of the city. Forty-six parking locations are to be installed through a two-year agreement with service provider Lime. The majority of residents will have a parking location within 500 metres (a five- to 10-minute walk) of their home.
“E-scooter and e-bike sharing in Port Moody will make it easier for people to access active travel modes that are more affordable and better for the planet,” says Mayor Meghan Lahti. “One of Council’s strategic objectives is to embrace a multi-modal approach for mobility. This new program, with its focus on alternative methods of transportation, will strengthen connections between neighbourhoods and improve access and convenience for riders. Parking locations will be concentrated near bus stops, parks, and key civic facilities to connect riders to transit hubs and popular destinations.
“Port Moody’s Car-Free Day, happening on St. Johns Street on Sunday, August 17, is a perfect time to try out this new service. I encourage you to hop on an e-scooter or e-bike and join the celebration!”
Visit portmoody.ca/escooters-ebikes to learn more about the program including safety rules and regulations. Riders who wish to rent a shared e-scooter or e-bike can do so via the Lime app, available for iOS (Apple) and Android (Google Play). Visit the Lime Help Centre to learn more about how to get started. The service provider is responsible for parking issues, maintenance, and the removal and relocation of shared e-scooters and e-bikes.
Within Port Moody’s designated service area, with the exception of slow-ride zones, the provider’s vehicles will be programmed to travel at no more than 25 kilometres per hour. When entering the following identified slow-ride zones, the provider’s vehicles will gradually slow down to 15 kilometres per hour: Shoreline Trail, Port Moody Recreation Complex, Kyle Centre, Glenayre Community Centre, Westhill Park, Moody Street Overpass, Klahanie Overpass, and Union Street Overpass.
The shared e-bike and e-scooter program will require all devices to be parked within designated mandatory parking locations. The service provider will implement technologies that utilize geofencing and artificial intelligence (AI) to support parking tidiness and safety throughout the city. Mandatory parking symbols will be displayed in-app to guide riders to designated parking locations where trips must be ended. The app also includes images and real-time availability of parking locations, making it easier for users to identify appropriate locations to end their ride.
If an e-scooter or e-bike is not parked in a designated location, the Lime app will alert the rider and help to locate nearby parking. Lime advises that improperly parked vehicles may be subject to a warning or penalty.
Port Moody joined the Province's Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project in June 2024. This program allows the use of e-scooters on public streets to broaden sustainable transportation options. Riders may operate e-scooters:
- in a designated cycling lane or as near as possible to the right side of the road when travelling on a street with a posted speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour or slower; and
- only in a designated cycling lane when travelling on a street with a posted speed limit greater than 50 kilometres per hour.
Find more information on the Province's Electric Kick Scooter Rules and Safety web page. For both e-scooters and e-bikes, riders must wear a helmet – it’s the law.
E-scooter and e-bike sharing aligns with goals and objectives in the City’s Climate Action Plan and Master Transportation Plan as well as the 2023-2026 Council Strategic Plan and the Tri-Cities Zero Emission Mobility Plan.
