City of Port Moody purchases land to achieve vision of expanding Rocky Point Park

The City of Port Moody has purchased 43,560 square feet (one acre) of land at 3016 Murray Street for additional park space.

“On behalf of Council, I’m excited to announce the purchase of this land, which will become a part of Rocky Point Park in the future,” said Acting Mayor Meghan Lahti. “Acquiring land on the north side of Murray Street and east of Rocky Point Park is a long-standing goal in our Official Community Plan, and we’re very pleased to be able to turn this vision into reality.

“This purchase also helps us achieve two of the objectives in our new Council Strategic Plan: expand and make the most of our parks, and encourage lifelong healthy and active living,” continued Lahti. “This is the beginning of a process that may take several years, but the end result will be protected park space where current and future generations can engage in recreational activities and enjoy our natural environment.”

The City purchased the land for $3.9 million with funds taken from established reserves such as the Heritage Reserve and the Community Amenity Contributions Reserve. The date of possession was June 27, 2019.

Currently, there are tenants on the property who hold three active leases. The City anticipates these leases will continue until they expire, which means there may be tenants on the site until 2026 if all lease options are exercised.
