The City of Port Moody invites the community to celebrate a new public art installation, a mural titled West Coast by artist Amy Bao. Join us at the Rotary SK8 Park (2910 Murray Street) on Saturday, June 13, 2026 between 11am and 1pm – opening remarks are scheduled to start at 11:10am. We invite you to meet the artist, engage with the mural (selfies encouraged!), and eat a sweet treat.

The completed mural is the culmination of the SK8 Park Mural Project, a collaborative initiative that brought together local youth and professional artist Amy Bao to create a meaningful and vibrant public artwork. This project was developed in partnership with the City of Port Moody’s Youth Focus Committee and the artist, with support from City staff.

“A key goal of the SK8 Park Mural Project was to provide youth with an opportunity to express their voices, creativity, and identity in a visible and lasting way within their community,” says Mayor Meghan Lahti. “Through mentorship and collaboration with an experienced artist, participating youth gained insight into the artistic process while contributing to a shared civic space in the City of the Arts. This project supports the City’s vision of enriching daily life through accessible and inspiring public art, fostering stronger connections between residents and their environment.”

The outdoor celebration event on June 13 will be held rain or shine – please dress for the weather. As parking in the area is limited, please consider walking, biking, scootering, or taking transit to the celebration.

In 2024, the Youth Focus Committee had the idea to create a new mural that reflects the theme “Natural World of the West Coast.” In 2025, the Committee shortlisted three artists, conducted interviews, and selected Amy Bao for the project. Bao, based in Vancouver, has created numerous murals across the Lower Mainland and is known for her nature-inspired work, making her a strong fit for this project and location.

Youth Focus Committee members contributed ideas and took part in painting a portion of the new mural, and Bao ran two workshops: one for the Youth Focus Committee and one for participants at the 2026 Mayor’s Youth Summit.

The SK8 Park Mural Project continues the legacy of youth-driven public art at this site, as the new piece replaces The Future is Behind Us, part of a previous Youth Focus Committee mural project completed in 2009 with artist Kris Kupskay. The new mural is a dynamic and welcoming feature within the Rotary SK8 Park and Rocky Point Park, enhancing the space for residents and visitors alike.
