On May 12, 2026, City Council endorsed the Recreation Facilities Study, a document that will guide future planning and decision-making for recreational infrastructure in Port Moody over the next 25 years. The full study is available at portmoody.ca/reports.

“Municipal recreation facilities are an important part of our community – they promote physical activity, mental wellness, lifelong learning, and social connection in spaces where everyone is welcome,” said Mayor Meghan Lahti. “As demand grows for recreation opportunities in Port Moody, we’ll continue to explore what kinds of facilities and spaces may be needed in the future. This detailed and thoughtful study was developed after an extensive process to conduct research on existing facilities and collect input from the community. It provides an assessment of the current state of existing City-owned recreation facilities and amenities, identifies gaps in meeting future demand, and considers potential priorities, options, and approaches to guide planning. As we move toward 2050, the Recreation Facilities Study will help us make decisions that contribute to a healthy community where people of all ages can stay active and feel connected.”

The study focuses on community centres, aquatic facilities, and multi-sport spaces as well as outdoor sport courts and sport fields. Within those categories, the study looks at 23 different types of recreation amenities and assigns a prioritization ranking for each based on demand indicators plus benefits indicators (e.g. how easily an amenity can be adapted for future uses). These rankings provide an initial reference point for the City as future infrastructure investments are considered and prioritized over time. The study also includes a summary of service level recommendations and overall facility planning considerations.

The Recreation Facilities Study is based on comprehensive background research and analysis of Port Moody’s existing recreation facilities and the probable impacts of future growth and demographic shifts. Public engagement, conducted in September/October 2024, also informed the study’s development. Participants were invited to provide information about how they use existing facilities, whether they experience any barriers when accessing facilities and programs, and what types of recreation spaces they would like to see in Port Moody. A summary of public engagement results is available at engage.portmoody.ca.
