Naturescaping
In Port Moody, we promote the Naturescape B.C. program and the integration of wildlife habitat on private property. Naturescaping, or natural landscaping, creates ecologically sound, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing urban landscapes through the use of native plant species. These species provide food and shelter for wildlife and are adapted to our local climate, soils, predators, pollinators, and diseases. Naturescaping also involves retaining and incorporating specialized habitat elements into parks and natural spaces where feasible.
Naturescape Policy
The City's Naturescape Policy identifies principles that we apply to all publicly-owned lands. Naturescape principles and native plants are required on re-developed private property that is located adjacent to or within Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs). The City encourages implementing naturescaping on privately owned lands regardless of proximity to ESAs. We also encourage responsible lawn care and maintenance. Our Pesticide Use Control Bylaw regulates the use of pesticides on private and public property. You can refer to the City's Climate Resilient Landscaping Standards for best practices on plant selection and garden design for biodiversity and sustainability.
