Building and Renovating

Are you planning to build, deconstruct, or renovate on your property? Make sure you get all the necessary permits and adhere to appropriate guidelines. This page will help you get started.

Permit requirements

All building and home renovations in Port Moody are regulated by the City's Zoning Bylaw. Before you begin your next project, we recommend you review our Good Neighbour Guidelinesbuilding guides and bulletinsBC Energy Step Code and Zero Carbon Step Code requirements, and Fees Bylaw. In addition to City bylaws, guidelines, and requirements, be sure to review the provincial government’s building codes and standards.

Refer to the deconstruction permit process for more information on demolition application requirements

Answers to common questions can also be found in the FAQs at the bottom of this page.

Applying for permits

If you're building a new home, renovating your current home, or adding a structure to your property, you need to apply for a building permit before any new construction takes place. Visit our Building Guides and Bulletins page for more helpful information before you get started.

When you're ready to start the application process, you'll need to complete a deconstruction permit application and/or a building permit application, then submit all supporting documents online through Port Moody's eServices portal.

Other applications you may require, and which must be submitted separately online, include:

Booking an inspection

Learn about the inspections that are required for standard building projects. Submit an inspection request form to make a booking.

Current building applications

Use the interactive building applications map to view details on current building permit applications and the milestones they have reached within the review process. New building permit applications will be added to this map once the application and supporting documents have been reviewed by staff and determined to be complete.

Donate your existing home

If you are redeveloping your property, consider donating your existing home. Many homes can be repurposed instead of deconstructed. Check with a local building move company to see if your home can be given new life.
