Heritage and History
Heritage resources are a key component of Port Moody's identity. Many people, places, and events have contributed to the development of the City's history.
The City of Port Moody is located on the ancestral and unceded homelands of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), qʼʷa:n̓ƛʼən̓ (Kwantlen), qiqéyt (Qayqayt), and Stó:lō (Sto:lo) Peoples. Indigenous history in this region extends far beyond municipal incorporation and continues to shape the cultural and environmental landscape of these lands today.
One way that Port Moody commemorates the community's rich history is through a variety of heritage conservation initiatives. We protect important historical properties and areas through heritage property designations and Heritage Conservation Areas. We also celebrate our past by putting up commemorative stone markers and storyboards throughout the city.
In recent years, efforts have also been made to reflect Indigenous voices and histories through these commemorative features. Where possible, Indigenous place names, teachings, and oral histories are being shared in collaboration with local Nations. As we expand our understanding of Port Moody’s layered history, we continue to work alongside Indigenous partners to ensure their stories are respectfully reflected in the city’s heritage landscape.
Use the Port Moody Heritage and Public Art Guide to walk through the city and explore stone markers, storyboards, and all of the properties on our Heritage Register, and in our Heritage Conservation Areas.
The Faces of Clarke Street Project
The Faces of Clarke Street project provides a unique way to explore the historic centre of Port Moody. Created by 2023 summer students Carissa and Joshmar, this digital, self-guided walking tour is an exploration of the history of Clarke Street and the people that make up its community today.
