Update on water shut off at 1142 Cecile Drive

Yesterday, a planned temporary water shut off was impacted by the subsequent failure of a private water valve on private property. The contractor has advised the City that private water service is expected to be restored to affected residents at 1142 Cecile Drive this evening.

To support the planned water shut off, City staff closed a city valve on the morning of April 10, 2025 to permit a contractor for a private construction project to connect a temporary water bypass to the city system. In keeping with the City’s standard of service expectations, residents of impacted buildings should have been notified of the temporary water shut off. However, the City has learned that some, but not all, building residents received notifications – we are reviewing the notification process with the contractor so that we can better ensure impacted residents are duly notified in future.

Once the temporary connection was completed, City staff opened the previously closed city valve at approximately 2:30pm that same afternoon. Shortly thereafter, a leak in a different private valve located in the property owner’s water system was identified and the contractor determined they would need to shut off the private service to complete the repair. The contractor for the property owner began emergency work early this morning, April 11, 2025, on a repair to the private water service.

The City has been advised that the contractor has notified impacted residents that once their water is restored, they may experience temporary discolouration, pressure fluctuations, and sediment in their water. If this occurs, residents are advised to run cold water in a bathtub or other large fixture until the water begins to clear up.
