Traffic calming measures coming to Spring and St. George streets September 28
On September 28, 2020, the City of Port Moody will introduce traffic calming measures on Spring Street and St. George Street to improve pedestrian, cyclist, and driver safety.
On Spring Street, barricades will be set up at five intersections to prevent traffic from entering. For drivers, the traffic pattern changes will include:
- no eastbound access to Spring Street from Douglas Street, Elgin Street, and Kyle Street;
- no westbound access to Spring Street from Grant Street and Moody Street; and
- right turn only for eastbound traffic on Spring Street at Moody Street.
Vehicles will still be able to exit Spring Street at all intersections. Restrictions will not apply to pedestrians or cyclists.
This is a pilot project; temporary measures will be monitored and adjusted as necessary until permanent measures can be implemented. Visit portmoody.ca to read staff’s Report to Council and view a map showing the changes.
The City is introducing these traffic calming measures in response to concerns raised by residents. Traffic monitoring indicates that commuters are using Spring Street to avoid the evening rush hour on Clarke Street and St. Johns Street. Spring Street was not designed for commuter traffic and the changes at the five intersections noted above are designed to stop commuters from using Spring Street to bypass Clarke Street or St. Johns Street during peak travel times.
On St. George Street, access will be limited to local traffic from Albert Street to Elgin Street, Kyle Street to Grant Street, and Hugh Street to Buller Street.
Barricades will be set up at six intersections on St. George Street to prevent traffic from entering. For drivers, the traffic pattern will mean:
- no eastbound access to St. George Street from Albert Street, Kyle Street, and Hugh Street; and
- no westbound access to St. George Street from Elgin Street, Grant Street, and Buller Street.
Vehicles will still be able to exit St. George Street at all intersections. Restrictions will not apply to pedestrians or cyclists. Visit portmoody.ca to read staff’s Report to Council and view a map showing the changes.
St. George Street is primarily a residential area and is designated as a neighbourhood bikeway providing a connection to schools and parks. As approved by Council to support outdoor activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, these traffic calming measures are designed to encourage all drivers to slow down and reduce traffic during peak travel times, allowing local residents the opportunity to benefit from slow zones to access local amenities. These temporary measures will be monitored for effectiveness through the end of summer 2021.
