Port Moody celebrates Earth Day early with free, hands-on activities for all ages on April 14

The City of Port Moody is celebrating Earth Day early this year with a variety of free, hands-on activities for all ages at the Inlet Theatre and Civic Centre Galleria (100 Newport Drive) on Sunday, April 14, 2019 between 2 and 5pm.

Each year on April 22, people around the world celebrate Earth Day, the world’s largest environmental movement. Earth Day is an opportunity to demonstrate our appreciation for the natural world and our commitment to protecting the planet. In Port Moody, we’re kicking off Earth Day celebrations early, with free activities on April 14:

  • participate in Portrait of a City, a new community art project facilitated by the City’s resident artist, Sara Graham – draw what you love about nature and wildlife in Port Moody, and your sketch will be integrated into a fence railing later this summer (Galleria, 2-5pm);
  • help plant Port Moody’s Canada 150 eco-sculpture and enjoy earth-friendly crafts, activities, and more (outside near the Galleria entrance, 2-5pm);
  • head out on a bird walk along the Shoreline Trail with the Burke Mountain Naturalists (meet in the Galleria at 2pm; the walk will conclude at 2:45pm);
  • enjoy a selection of Earth-inspired art curated by the Port Moody Art Association (on display in the Galleria daily from April 14 through April 18, 2019);
  • bring the kids for a special Earth Day story time presented by the Port Moody Public Library (Inlet Theatre, 2:15-2:45pm);
  •  brush up on your Bear Essentials with Tom Saare, chair of the North Shore Black Bear Society (3-4pm); and
  • watch a free screening of The Clean Bin Project, a multi-award-winning film and festival favourite that explores how we can all reduce the amount of waste we create (Inlet Theatre, 4–5pm).

Also on April 14, don’t miss Bats at Night! Join local experts from the Burke Mountain Naturalists to watch for, and learn about, bats in Rocky Point Park (2800-block Murray Street). Meet near the spray park at 7:30pm.
