Outdoor cooking appliances banned in Port Moody parks due to extreme fire hazard rating

Under Bylaw 2835, Fire Prevention and Emergency Response, City of Port Moody Fire-Rescue announces a ban on the use of outdoor cooking appliances of any kind in City parks, forested lands, and public green spaces. This ban is effective immediately until further notice.

Prohibited devices include cooking appliances that utilize propane or charcoal briquettes, or portable campfire devices that utilize charcoal briquettes, or liquid or gaseous fuels. Failure to comply with the ban carries a fine of $250.

“The fire hazard rating has been elevated from high to extreme due to continuing dry and warm weather,” says Port Moody Fire Chief Ron Coulson. “These conditions significantly raise the risk for accidental fires in wooded and urban areas. By following this ban on the use of outdoor cooking appliances in City parks and green spaces, Port Moody residents can help to keep their community safe.”

Port Moody Fire-Rescue maintains a four-step fire hazard rating with signage displayed at the northwest corner of Ioco Road and Murray Street.

Residents and visitors are reminded that smoking is not permitted in City parks at any time, and open fires are banned year-round within the municipal boundaries of the City of Port Moody.
