New Parkland Strategy will guide expansion and enhancement of the City’s park system to 2050

Port Moody’s Parkland Strategy, endorsed by City Council on June 10, 2025, provides a long-term framework to guide the planning, acquisition, enhancement, and connectivity of parkland through 2050.

“The Parkland Strategy outlines a long-term vision to expand and enhance Port Moody’s park system in response to anticipated population growth,” says Mayor Meghan Lahti. “It identifies key challenges that must be taken into consideration during planning and implementation, including limited land availability, shifting recreational needs, and climate adaptation, and outlines clear actions to address them. The city’s parks and open spaces are essential to community well-being, biodiversity, and climate resilience. With this Strategy in place, we’re equipped to make informed, equitable, and sustainable decisions for the future of Port Moody’s parks.”

The Parkland Strategy includes a vision and guiding principles, a comprehensive assessment of parkland services, neighbourhood overviews, and city-wide strategies that will help the City meet the needs of current and future residents. The Strategy also includes an implementation plan and a guide for planning and prioritizing parkland contributions during redevelopment.

The city-wide strategies focus on three interconnected themes:

  1. expand – increase parkland through strategic acquisitions, partnerships, and planning tools to support future demand;
  2. improve – upgrade and renew existing parks and amenities to maximize usability and sustainability; and
  3. connect – strengthen trails, greenways, and pedestrian-friendly streetscapes to improve access and link parks with neighborhoods.

While the Parkland Strategy notes that “expand” is the priority, recommendations under these three themes work together to achieve the targeted parkland level of service. Reconciliation and partnerships are embedded across all three themes. Indigenous knowledge and cultural connections will be incorporated to better reflect the land’s history and ongoing stewardship, while collaboration with external organizations, private landowners, and the school district will further support the City’s ability to achieve parkland goals efficiently and effectively.

The process of developing the Parkland Strategy included a review of technical information – including an analysis of Port Moody’s existing parkland, pedestrian access, amenities and features, and urban green spaces – and current best practices in parkland planning. Public engagement was also a critical component. Activities included an open house, community survey, and youth engagement session in 2023 (what we heard report), a youth open house in 2024 (what we heard report, and the Mayor’s Town Hall and Community Dialogue on Park Expansion in Moody Centre in 2025 (what we heard report).
