Find your creative place in Port Moody during Culture Days September 25 to October 25
The City of Port Moody invites you to find your creative place indoors, outdoors, or online as we celebrate Culture Days over four weeks from September 25 to October 25, 2020.
The idea behind Culture Days is to offer free, hands-on activities that encourage the public to go behind the scenes and discover the world of arts and culture. Visit portmoody.ca/culturedays or culturedays.ca to find out what’s happening in Port Moody. Learn how to make botanical ink, make a monoprint using a homemade printing plate, animate our city by placing paper eyes on found objects, or go on a walking tour to discover art in public spaces. Take photos of what you create and what you see – for example, your own one-of-a-kind monoprint, an inanimate object that’s come “alive,” or your favourite piece of public art – and post your pics to social media using #culturedayspomo.
Don’t miss these free activities during Culture Days 2020:
Botanical Inkmaking
This activity will be available online at portmoody.ca/culturedays from September 25 to October 25, 2020. Learn how to make ink from natural materials that can be foraged from your own backyard. Our resident artist, Sara Graham, has prepared a how-to video that you can watch from the comfort of your own home. Use the ink to create your own unique works of art.
Botanical Ink Giveaway
This in-person activity is happening rain or shine on Saturday, September 26, 2020 from 10am to 12noon in front of the Civic Centre (100 Newport Drive) near the entrance to the Port Moody Public Library. Look for Sara Graham as she hands out bottles of homemade botanical ink. We encourage you to keep your distance from others and wear a face mask to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Gelli Monoprinting
This activity will be available online at portmoody.ca/culturedays from October 2 to October 25, 2020. Monoprinting is a form of printmaking that creates a unique image every time. Learn how to make your own inexpensive gelli plate (a printing plate made from gelatin) and use it to make a monoprint. Our resident artist will guide you through the process via video.
Making Faces
The printable instructions for this self-guided activity will be available at portmoody.ca/culturedays from October 9 to October 25, 2020. Making Faces is an urban art intervention – we want you to place paper eyes on inanimate objects throughout Port Moody to create the appearance of living creatures. Take a fun photo, and then remove the paper eyes and take them home with you to keep our city clean.
Inlet Theatre Interactive Tech Tour
This activity will be available online at portmoody.ca/culturedays from October 15 to October 25, 2020. Immerse yourself in an interactive tour of the technology operated by the Inlet Theatre technicians on a day-to-day basis. The technology supports a wide range of artistic productions and presentations, including live plays, talent showcases, dance performances, films, concerts, live-streamed council meetings, corporate training sessions, comedy shows, fundraising galas, and community-focused public speaking sessions. Get a different perspective on what is involved in the production of these events from the booth and back stage.
Public Art Walking Tour
The route map for this self-guided activity will be available at portmoody.ca/culturedays from October 16 to October 25, 2020. Download the map and head outside to discover all of the public art pieces located within walking distance of the Civic Centre (100 Newport Drive).
Visit culturedays.ca to find out about other events and activities happening around the Tri-Cities in September and October.
