On July 25, 2023, City Council and the Youth Focus Committee presented Port Moody resident Connor Flynn, who graduated from Heritage Woods Secondary School in June, with the 2023 Youth Scholarship Award.
“We are very pleased to present Connor with a $1,000 scholarship to further his education as he gets ready to study at the University of British Columbia,” said Mayor Meghan Lahti. “The Youth Scholarship Award recognizes leadership, contributions to school and community, and excellence in academics, athletics, arts, or technical education. Connor has achieved all these things through his dedication to sport and music, commendable work ethic, and desire to help others. On behalf of City Council and the Youth Focus Committee, I’d like to congratulate Connor and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
Connor is an avid musician who sings and plays guitar and piano. He has often shared his love of music with others, performing solo during mealtimes for residents of the Hawthorne Seniors Care Community.
Connor also devotes his time to sports. After sustaining a major knee injury early in his high school years, Connor went through many hours of rehabilitation, training, and strengthening, and worked hard to recover and return to his athletic pursuits. Nominated as the captain of the Heritage Woods boys’ volleyball team in his senior high school years, he was given the opportunity to mentor other players while participating in the game he loves.
Connor is an enthusiastic learner who earned a grade point average above 98 per cent in both grades 11 and 12. He plans to study sciences with a focus on biochemistry at UBC.
Each year, the City of Port Moody awards a $1,000 scholarship to a student who intends to pursue post-secondary education after Grade 12. Learn more about the Youth Scholarship Program at portmoody.ca
