City to pilot changes at Dewdney Trunk/St. Johns intersection to improve safety and traffic flow

The City of Port Moody will pilot traffic pattern changes at the Dewdney Trunk Road/St. Johns Street intersection to improve safety and traffic flow. Pending completion of weather-dependent construction scheduled for November 1, these changes could be in place as soon as Saturday, November 2, 2024.
“The City is aware of safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists as well as negative traffic flow impacts related to vehicles turning right onto St. Johns Street from Dewdney Trunk Road,” says Mayor Meghan Lahti. “To address these issues, we’re implementing a plan based on analysis and recommendations from a traffic modelling study. By starting with a pilot phase, staff will be able to monitor safety, traffic flow, and maintenance, and make any necessary adjustments to ensure positive impacts.”
The following improvements will be implemented as part of a one-year pilot:
- closure of the slip lane that currently allows drivers to turn right onto St. Johns Street from Dewdney Trunk Road without entering the intersection;
- conversion of the existing dual left-turn lanes on Dewdney Trunk Road into a single left-turn lane and a single right-turn lane;
- modification of traffic signal plans for the Dewdney Trunk Road/St. Johns Street and Ioco Road/St. Johns Street intersections; and
- installation of delineators along the eastbound left-turn lane on St. Johns Street at Ioco Road – drivers who plan to head north on Ioco Road will need to access the left-turn lane where St. Johns intersects with Dewdney Trunk Road.
View the traffic pattern changes on a map. Staff will share findings from the pilot and make recommendations for permanent changes in a report to Council in the fall of 2025.
