City presents 2025 Youth Sports Award to athlete and lacrosse ambassador Spencer Moore
On December 9, 2025, City Council presented 13-year-old Spencer Moore with the 2025 Youth Sports Award. Part of the City’s Civic Awards program, the Youth Sports Award recognizes the exceptional contributions of an individual aged 12 to 19 who has furthered the growth, reputation, and/or character of sport.
“On behalf of Council and the community, I would like to congratulate Port Moody resident Spencer Moore and thank him for his dedication to hockey and lacrosse, and his efforts to encourage youth to get involved,” said Mayor Meghan Lahti. “Spencer is an exceptional young athlete who has made positive contributions to the accessible sports movement in the Lower Mainland. He is an incredible example of what it truly means to be an inspirational athlete, an innovator, and a positive mentor.”
By the age of 10, Spencer's love of hockey was evident when he took up para ice hockey, formerly known as sledge hockey. Since then, Spencer has competed at Provincials against some of the finest athletes in the Pacific Northwest. He is one of the founding members of a new youth para hockey team, the Surrey Canucks – the only youth para ice hockey team in the Lower Mainland. Once his first hockey season was over, Spencer decided to try the game of lacrosse, through a national program called Lacrossing Barriers. Through this program, Spencer learned to play from one of the Tri-Cities’ very best teams, the Coquitlam Adanacs, who went on to win the Minto Cup that year. He learned how to use a sport wheelchair and lacrosse stick and is now known for his powerful shot. Spencer encourages other youth to try the game of lacrosse in his current role as Lacrossing Barriers’ West Coast Senior Ambassador.
The Youth Sports Award is open for nominations every two years between January and April, with one award presented per cycle. Port Moody’s Youth Focus Committee reviews nominations and forwards a recommendation to Council for final decision. Recipients’ names are added to a permanent plaque and submitted memorabilia items are displayed at the Recreation Complex for at least one year.
