City of Port Moody receives award for quality and transparency of its 2020 budget documents
The City of Port Moody is pleased to announce it has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its 2020 Financial Plan document. This award represents a significant achievement and reflects the City’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, the highest form of recognition for governmental budgeting in North America, is presented to local, provincial, and state governments that satisfy nationally-recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well a budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications tool. A budget document must be rated "proficient" in all four categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.
Port Moody joins a distinguished group of B.C. municipalities that have received the 2020 award including Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Vancouver, West Vancouver, Surrey, Vernon, Kelowna, Saanich, and Campbell River. Recipients from other parts of Canada include Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Toronto. A government must apply to be considered; in 2020, the City of Port Moody applied to the GFOA for the first time.
The Government Finance Officers Association, founded in 1906, represents public finance officials throughout the United States and Canada. The GFOA's more than 20,000 members are federal, state/provincial, and local finance officials deeply involved in planning, financing, and implementing thousands of governmental operations in each of their jurisdictions. The association's mission is to advance excellence in public finance.
GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality, and to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal. More than 1,600 governments, including states, cities, counties, special districts, school districts, and more, have been recognized for transparency in budgeting.
