Get a free tree through our Plant a Tree program to help improve Port Moody’s urban tree canopy

A planted tree being held up

On April 26 and May 2, 2026, the City is giving away ready-to-plant trees through our Plant a Tree program. Do you have space on your property for a new tree? Planting trees on private land is an important action that helps to improve Port Moody’s urban tree canopy.

If you are a Port Moody resident, you can sign up for one free tree per household at one of the following community events:

Port Moody’s Farmers Market

Date: Sunday, April 26, 2026 from 10am to 2pm
Location: Port Moody Recreation Complex parking lot (300 Ioco Road)
(After signing up, you will need to pick up your tree by 3:15pm on the same day at the Public Works Yard, 3250 Murray Street)

Fingerling Festival

Date: Saturday, May 2, 2026 from 11am to 3pm
Location: Port Moody Recreation Complex arena (300 Ioco Road)
(After signing up, you will need to pick up your tree by 3:15pm on the same day at the Public Works Yard, 3250 Murray Street)

“Trees have wide-ranging benefits – they improve water and air quality by filtering out pollutants, provide wildlife habitat which helps to support increased biodiversity, and give shade which helps cool the surrounding area,” says Mayor Meghan Lahti. "In 2025, we gave away 375 ready-to-plant trees to Port Moody residents for planting on private land, and we planted approximately 3,900 trees along city streets and in our parks and natural areas. Let’s continue to work together to plant trees and reduce the impacts of climate change on our community. If you have space on your property, I encourage you to pick up a free tree on April 26 or May 2.”

Need more reasons to plant a tree? Trees can:

  • strengthen our connection to nature, which helps reduce stress;
  • reduce costs associated with heating and cooling nearby buildings; and
  • increase property values.

Please note the following eligibility requirements and considerations:

  • the tree giveaway is open to Port Moody residents only – identification with proof of residency such as a driver’s license or recent utility bill will be required;
  • there is a limit of one tree per household (please pick up a tree for your own property only – you may not pick up on behalf of another person);
  • trees will be available only while supplies last;
  • if applicable, please check with the owner of the property where you reside, or your strata, to determine if tree planting is permitted;
  • trees obtained through our Plant a Tree program cannot be used to satisfy the replacement tree requirements for a tree management permit; and
  • before taking a tree, consider the time and physical capacity needed to look after it, as proper tree care includes pruning, mulching, and clearing leaves periodically.

Get help choosing the right species for your space by previewing our tree options sheet or talking to a knowledgeable staff member at an event. Trees come in five- or 10-gallon pots and range in weight from 11 to 27 kilograms (25 to 60 pounds) and in height from 0.6 to 1.8 metres (2 to 6 feet – be sure to check the tree options sheet for height at maturity before making your selection). Please keep the weight and height of available species in mind when making plans to transport your tree from the pick-up location to your property – whether it’s a pull wagon/cart or a car/truck, you will likely need a set of wheels!

Port Moody’s urban tree canopy – the layer of tree leaves, branches, and stems that shelter the ground when viewed from above – strengthens our community’s climate resilience and overall health and well-being. Planting trees is a strategy in our Urban Forest Management Strategy (UFMS) and our Climate Action Plan. See the 2025 UFMS Report Card for key metrics such as the number of trees planted and removed on public land.
