We need your input! Get involved in Phase 2 engagement activities for Trees in Port Moody
PORT MOODY – Let’s talk about trees! The City of Port Moody is developing an Urban Forest Management Strategy and reviewing our Tree Protection Bylaw, and we want your input. Get involved in Phase 2 engagement activities: join us in person at our Urban Forest Management Strategy Open House on Thursday, June 1, 2023, and visit our online public engagement hub, Engage Port Moody, to fill out two community surveys by June 25, 2023.
Port Moody’s trees are integral to the health and well-being of our people, plants, and animals, and we’re asking our residents to help us develop tools to manage and protect this vital community resource. Public engagement for Trees in Port Moody is happening in phases. In Phase 1 (May/June 2022), we asked for public input to help us develop a shared vision and to identify opportunities to improve how we plan, manage, grow, protect, and partner with the community for the urban forest. We also asked participants to answer general questions related to tree protection requirements and tree removal.
In Phase 2, underway now, we’re asking for feedback on the draft Urban Forest Management Strategy and on priorities for implementation. We’re also gathering input on community values and preferences for tree protection requirements and tree removal in Port Moody. Input collected from the public will inform:
- the refinement of the draft Urban Forest Management Strategy, which will be presented to Council for their consideration in summer 2023; and
- the development of recommended key directions for Tree Protection Bylaw updates.
How should we manage and protect trees as our community evolves? Here’s how you can get involved in Phase 2 public engagement activities:
- attend our Urban Forest Management Strategy Open House on Thursday, June 1, 2023, in person at the Civic Centre (100 Newport Drive) between 4:30pm and 7:30pm – view information boards, ask questions, and share your thoughts with City staff and the consultants who are drafting the Strategy;
- fill out one or both of our community surveys online at engage.portmoody.ca – our Urban Forest Management Strategy survey and our Tree Protection Bylaw Review survey will both be open through June 25, 2023; and
- leave a comment on the Tree Protection Bylaw Review project page about the existing bylaw – what do you think about Port Moody’s current requirements for tree protection?
If you prefer to fill out the surveys on paper, you can request a copy at City Hall (100 Newport Drive) during regular business hours, or at the Urban Forest Management Strategy Open House on June 1. Your paper survey must be returned to City Hall by Friday, June 23, 2023.
Our Trees in Port Moody projects recognize the vital role of trees in our community, and were developed in response to Council’s declaration of a climate emergency and the City’s goal of restoring and strengthening our urban forest (articulated in Port Moody’s Climate Action Plan). Visit engage.portmoody.ca/trees to learn more about both projects.
