Students in caps and gowns to celebrate graduation

Port Moody City Council has proclaimed June 14 to 20 to be Grad 2020 Week to recognize and celebrate our local students who are graduating from high school during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

With the cancellation of traditional graduation ceremonies and celebrations due to COVID-19, the City wants to ensure the milestone is still acknowledged in special ways. In addition to the proclamation, the City is showing its support for grads by:

  • posting a special video message from Mayor Rob Vagramov on the City’s website;
  • encouraging friends, family members, and businesses to print a “Congratulations Port Moody graduates!” sign and hang it in their windows, and use a custom Facebook photo frame to recognize 2020 grads on social media;
  • lighting up City Hall with school colours during each school’s virtual commencement ceremony – the dome lights will be burgundy on June 15, 2020 to honour students graduating from Heritage Woods Secondary School and blue on June 20, 2020 to honour students graduating from Port Moody Secondary School;
  • placing a sign at Newport Drive and Ioco Road congratulating Port Moody grads; and
  • encouraging Port Moody residents to participate in the province-wide Grad 2020 Shout Out on June 20, 2020 at 8:20pm – clap, cheer, wave signs, bang pots, and honk horns while grads around the province throw their caps in the air.
