Ian Young“It is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of former Port Moody Mayor Ian Young, who served this community as mayor from 1978 to 1981 and as alderman from 1976 to 1977. Mr. Young passed away in Victoria, B.C. on January 31, 2020 at the age of 81. At the time of his election as mayor in 1978, Mr. Young was the youngest person ever to be elected to the position in Port Moody at just 38 years old. He made many important contributions to the community including the preservation of land for Inlet Park and the establishment of the first Environmental Protection Committee. In his personal life, Mr. Young was an entrepreneur who operated a variety of businesses, including a travel agency and a photo studio that was, at the time, the largest in western Canada. He was a member of four different Rotary clubs and volunteered as a tutor, assisting people who were learning English as a second language. On behalf of Council and Port Moody’s residents, I offer sincere condolences to Mr. Young’s family and offer thanks for his years of public service.”
