Know the risks, make a plan, enter to win an emergency kit during Emergency Preparedness Week 2017
In advance of Emergency Preparedness Week in B.C., the City of Port Moody is urging residents to know the risks, make a plan, and build an emergency kit. Residents who visit the City’s website to learn how to prepare for an emergency can enter online to win a four-person, four-day deluxe emergency kit valued at approximately $400.
Emergency Preparedness Week – May 7 to 13, 2017 – is a national event designed to help Canadians take action to protect themselves and their families during emergencies. The City has made it easy for residents to find a variety of useful emergency preparedness information all in one place, at portmoody.ca/emergency. Residents can read about the risks for our region, and download helpful planning guides, such as PreparedBC’s Household Emergency Plan template, Household Preparedness Guide, and Neighbourhood Preparedness Guide. PreparedBC guides are also available at Inlet Centre Fire Hall (150 Newport Drive) and the Port Moody Public Library (100 Newport Drive).
“Once residents know the risks and make a plan, it’s important they take the next step and build an emergency kit,” said Fire Chief Ron Coulson. “The City’s Emergency Preparedness web page has tips for building grab-and-go kits, as well as home emergency kits that will support a household for at least 72 hours. It’s a great idea to have kits in different places, like your car or your workplace, because you might not be at home when there’s an emergency.”
Residents can enter to win a deluxe emergency kit at portmoody.ca/emergency. The four-person, four-day kit contains emergency essentials such as: food items and purified water pouches; first aid kit with four face masks; safety blankets and rain ponchos; mini camp stove and fuel tablets; SOS blinker; waterproof matches; survival guide; crank solar AM/FM radio with LED flashlight; and mini AM/FM transistor radio with batteries.
Paper entry forms will also be available at the Fingerling Festival on Saturday, May 6 (at the Port Moody Recreation Complex, 300 Ioco Road) and at City Hall (100 Newport Drive) until Friday, May 12. There is a limit of one entry per person; an entrant must be a Port Moody resident, 19 years of age or older, to enter and be eligible to win. Residents can submit entries online until Sunday, May 14. Full rules and regulations for the emergency kit giveaway are available at portmoody.ca/emergency.
