In advance of Emergency Preparedness Week in B.C., the City of Port Moody is urging residents to know the risks, make a plan, and build an emergency kit. Residents who visit the City’s website to learn how to prepare for an emergency can enter online to win a three-person, four-day emergency kit valued at approximately $300.

Emergency Preparedness Week – May 6 to 12, 2018 – is a national event designed to help Canadians take action to protect themselves and their families during emergencies. The City has made it easy for residents to find a variety of useful emergency preparedness information all in one place, at portmoody.ca/emergency. Residents can read about the risks for our region, and download helpful planning guides, such as PreparedBC’s Household Emergency Plan template, Household Preparedness Guide, and Neighbourhood Preparedness Guide. PreparedBC guides are also available at Inlet Centre Fire Hall (150 Newport Drive) and the Port Moody Public Library (100 Newport Drive).

“It’s important to remember that in an emergency, it may take emergency workers and utility crews some time to provide assistance to you and your neighbours,” said Fire Chief Ron Coulson. “All of us need to be prepared to take care of ourselves and our family members for at least 72 hours. I urge all Port Moody residents to build an emergency kit for your house, and a grab-and-go kit for your car or your workplace. If you’re not sure how to get started, visit the City’s Emergency Preparedness web page for tips, checklists, and planning templates.”

Residents can enter to win a three-person, four-day emergency kit at portmoody.ca/emergency. The kit contains emergency essentials such as: food items and purified water pouches; first aid kit with three face masks; safety blankets and rain ponchos; mini camp stove and fuel tablets; waterproof matches; and a crank AM/FM radio with LED flashlight.

Paper entry forms will also be available at the Fingerling Festival on Saturday, May 5 (Port Moody Recreation Complex, 300 Ioco Road) and at City Hall (100 Newport Drive) until Friday, May 11, 2018. There is a limit of one entry per person; an entrant must be a Port Moody resident, 19 years of age or older, to enter and be eligible to win. Residents can submit entries online until Sunday, May 13. Full rules and regulations for the emergency kit giveaway are available at portmoody.ca/emergency.
