Starting Monday, December 11, 2023, trail users will be detoured around sections of the boardwalk and gravel Shoreline Trail until Phase 1 of the Shoreline Trail Boardwalk Replacement Project is completed in spring 2024.

The trail closure will start with a smaller section and expand to accommodate additional space needed for construction materials as the work progresses.

Starting Monday, December 11, 2023, the section of boardwalk and gravel trail that runs between Murray Street (3200 block) and the connector trail behind Trasolini Field will be closed. As the paved, multi-use Shoreline Trail pathway along this same stretch also remains closed until December 22, 2023 for work on the Sanitary Sewer Upgrades Project, trail users will be directed to a detour using Murray Street and the gravel access path behind Trasolini Field during this time.

After the paved, multi-use Shoreline Trail pathway opens, the closure of the boardwalk and gravel trail will be extended to include the full section from Murray Street to the bridge over Noons Creek. This timing will provide trail users with a detour route along the multi-use pathway, though users should note there will be intermittent closures to the multi-use pathway for final trail paving in early 2024.

The Shoreline Trail boardwalks were originally constructed by City crews over 30 years ago as part of a larger trail system connecting Rocky Point Park to Old Orchard Park across the tidal mud flats and marshes. These unique wooden structures are aging and are frequently covered by water during king tides and storm surges. In 2021 an engineering assessment determined that the boardwalks and bridges will need to be replaced within the next few years, and City staff began the process of planning for this trail renewal.

Phase 1 construction will include the section of boardwalk and gravel path between Murray Street and the connector trail behind Trasolini Field. The remaining section of the boardwalk and gravel path, extending from the Phase 1 section to the bridge over Noons Creek, will be replaced in Phase 2, pending future funding. Phase 2 is also expected to include a viewing platform as part of a collaboration with the In the Presence of Ancestors project.
