City purchases land near Kyle Centre to add park space in Moody Centre neighbourhood
The City of Port Moody has purchased 17,405 square feet (0.4 acres) of land – a combined total for two properties located near the Kyle Centre facility – for additional park space in Moody Centre.
“On behalf of Council, I’m pleased to announce that, with the purchase of this land, we’ll be able to expand the park space in this neighbourhood in the future,” says Mayor Meghan Lahti. “One of the goals in our 2023-2026 Council Strategic Plan is to enhance and expand parkland and open spaces. Given the scarcity of available land suitable for park space, the City needs to monitor the market carefully and strive when possible to purchase lands as they become available. This purchase in Moody Centre is a strategic decision that helps us protect green space for future public use and address a recognized deficit of parkland in an evolving neighbourhood.”
The City purchased the two properties, located at 2506 and 2510 St. George Street, for a combined total of $5.9 million with funds taken from Parks Development Cost Charges (DCCs). DCCs are collected from developers to help finance growth-related infrastructure and improvements. Parks DCCs provide a specific and dedicated source of funding for capital costs associated with providing and improving public parks and green space.
The dates of possession are December 7, 2024 and January 16, 2025. Currently, there are tenants on the properties who hold active leases. The City will use the services of a property management firm to support the management of these properties while the tenants remain in place.
There is no timeline at present for the change in land use from residential to park space. Before making any decisions, the City will continue to gather information and input on park space needs in the neighbourhood. In 2025, Port Moody residents will be invited to share their thoughts on expanding parkland in the Moody Centre neighbourhood at a Mayor's Town Hall and Community Dialogue on Park Expansion in Moody Centre.
