2024 spike award winners

On November 28, 2024, the City of Port Moody’s Economic Development and Tourism Committee presented the 2024 Spike Business Awards during a special ceremony held in the Inlet Theatre. 

The Spike Business Awards celebrate and recognize the significant contributions of Port Moody’s business community in six categories: Business Impact, Puts Port Moody on the Map, City of the Arts Business, New Business, Community Builder, and Business of the Year. 

“Congratulations to the winners of the 2024 Spike Business Awards!” said Mayor Meghan Lahti. “You represent a vibrant business community that creates jobs, fosters creativity and innovation, and is constantly finding new ways to make Port Moody an even better place. We recognize and celebrate your hard work and dedication, and your tremendous investment in your business, your employees, and your community.” 

Here are the winners for 2024: 

Business Impact: Site B Community Inc. 

Site B Community Inc. has earned a reputation as an as asset in the community by supporting business development and athletics through its venue space, and by helping event promoters/coordinators bring in culturally driven events that engage established locals looking for something different to do as well as newer members of the community including young families. Previously, a wide variety of events/activities such as Oktoberfest, salsa dancing, comedians, and live bands would need to be held outside the community. Site B has created a local space that cultivates community, connections, art, and opportunity. This business is proud to be a destination for and sponsor of the Canadian Blood Services blood drive and PoMoArts. 

Puts Port Moody on the Map: The Parkside Brewery/Rewind Beer Co. 

Rewind's 80s and 90s brand has made their tasting room a unique and nostalgic destination. They have the most Instagram (IG) followers (123,000) of any craft brewery in Canada, plus more than 80 million IG video views and six million TikTok video views. Rewind recently took home a silver medal at the Canada Beer Cup awards and is the home of Port Moody's first Detroit-style pizza brand. Parkside has become a trusted brand, earning many accolades including two recent BC Craft Beer awards. Owners Vern Lambourne and Sam Payne are proud to support the community via sponsorships and donations, and their annual Pride event has helped put Port Moody on the map as a welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community. 

City of the Arts Business: Willow and Wallflower Home Decor 

Willow and Wallflower actively contributes to the creative economy in the City of the Arts, proudly carrying work from more than 120 Canadian artists, 30 per cent of whom are based in the Tri-Cities. This broad representation of local talent strengthens the community's arts economy and provides vital support for emerging and established artists. In addition to the store's offerings, Willow and Wallflower elevates the City of the Arts brand by participating in key local events like Car-Free Day and the Art Shuffle, giving local artists a visible platform to showcase their work. This business also fosters innovative cross-sector partnerships, engaging with both the arts and business communities to co-create events and initiatives that bridge art with retail.

New Business: The Lift Ski, Bike, & Board 

Jon Wilson, Nicole Wilson, Cindy Croston, and Rob Croston opened The Lift Ski, Bike, and Board to share their passion for outdoor adventures with the community and to promote an active, adventurous lifestyle. Since opening two years ago, the shop has grown steadily, reaching more than 300 five-star Google reviews. The owners remain committed to their mission to provide exceptional customer service, develop their team members, and give back to the community. They have created opportunities to make skiing, snowboarding, and cycling more accessible through options like pre-owned skis and daily/seasonal rentals. The Lift Ski, Bike, & Board is also building a strong e-commerce business with sales now expanding all over Canada and the United States. 

Community Builder: Yvette Cuthbert and Jamie Cuthbert (Rocky Point Ice Cream) 

Rocky Point Ice Cream has been a landmark business in Port Moody for 28 years. In that time, the business has grown not only in size but in its commitment to community building and local impact. Owners Yvette Cuthbert and Jamie Cuthbert proudly support a range of local initiatives and community events, as well as Eagle Ridge Hospital, SHARE Community and Family Services, KidSport, and youth sports teams, with financial and in-kind donations. From creating more than 1,000 summer jobs that provide young people with valuable work experience to focusing on locally sourced ingredients and sustainable practices, the Cuthberts’ dedication to improving Port Moody is reflected in their sustained investment in their business as well as the broader community. 

Business of the Year (two winners): Inspine Therapy and Saltire Contracting 

Inspine Therapy 

Inspine Therapy was founded in June 2020. Clinic director Chris and associate director Erika have built the business into a thriving clinic known for its exceptional patient care and professional development. The team opened a second location in Coquitlam in 2021, followed by a third clinic in Langley in 2024, and a fourth location is opening soon in Vancouver. Inspine Therapy is proud to be one of the fastest-growing multidisciplinary clinics in the region, with a passion for giving back to the Port Moody community. They offer complimentary joint health workshops for local seniors and free youth posture and fitness assessments. In addition, they host outdoor Pilates and Zumba events, bringing the community together for fun, fitness, and connection. 

Saltire Contracting 

Founded in 2016 by Scott Fraser, Saltire Contracting is a general contracting company offering complete design-build services in Port Moody and throughout the Lower Mainland. Saltire's deep understanding of the city's culture and dynamics allows it to anticipate the needs of local businesses and build spaces that not only serve their operational requirements but also enhance their brand identity and customer experience. In the past year, the company has successfully completed multiple high-profile projects, including the transformation of spaces for notable clients like Rewind Beer and Elmo Baking, helping them redefine their brand experiences. Saltire aims to be a catalyst for positive change and growth in the community by fostering local employment, supporting sustainable development, and creating community-centered spaces.
