Ninety-eight per cent of Port Moody residents rate their overall quality of life as “good” or “very good,” according to the City of Port Moody 2018 Citizen Survey. This rating has remained constant, at 98 or 99 per cent, over the last three surveys dating back to 2012.

“Year over year, Port Moody residents are telling us they are very satisfied with the quality of life they enjoy in our city,” says Mayor Mike Clay. “These results speak not only to our City services, facilities, and amenities, but to the people who live here and the sense of community they have helped to create in their own neighbourhoods and in the city as a whole. Council and City staff will continue to work hard to ensure Port Moody residents are proud of their community.”

Key survey findings include:

  • nearly all citizens (98%) rate the overall quality of life in Port Moody today as “good” or “very good”;
  • when asked if quality of life has “stayed the same,” “improved,” or “worsened” over the past three years, 51% of residents say quality of life has “stayed the same,” 25% say it has “improved,” and 23% say it has “worsened”;
    • among those who say quality of life has improved, the top five reasons are SkyTrain/Evergreen Line, good public transportation, more activities/things to do, good amenities/services, and growth/development;
    • among those who say quality of life has worsened, the top five reasons are growth/development, too much traffic, more expensive/cost of living, SkyTrain/Evergreen Line, and high taxes;
    • citizens identify growth and development (42%) and transportation (40%) as the most important local issues facing Port Moody;
    • nearly all residents (97%) are “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with the level and quality of City services;
    • a high proportion (89%) of residents think they receive good value for their tax dollars;
    • when asked about balancing taxation and service delivery levels, 55% of citizens say increasing taxes is their preferred option to maintain, enhance, or expand services, and 35% say cutting services is their preferred option.

“While citizen satisfaction continues to be very high,” Clay continues, “Council is also aware of the concerns and frustrations related to affordability, growth, and traffic congestion, not just in Port Moody, but around the region. We continue to work to provide balanced growth that improves the city for current and future residents and enhances our natural environment.”

Every two years, the City of Port Moody conducts a Citizen Survey to ask residents how satisfied they are with City performance, services, and overall quality of life in Port Moody. Between April 25 and May 7, 2018, Ipsos Public Affairs conducted a random telephone survey of 400 Port Moody residents, aged 18 and older. Data collected was weighted to ensure the overall age and gender composition of the final sample reflects the actual Port Moody population according to national Census data. The overall margin of error is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
