Check the expiration date on home smoke alarms during Fire Prevention Week
Port Moody Fire Rescue is urging residents to check the expiration date on their smoke alarms during National Fire Prevention Week, October 9 to 15.
“The B.C. Fire Code says all dwellings must have smoke alarms, but many people don’t know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced,” said Port Moody Fire Chief Remo Faedo. “We’re asking residents to check the expiration date on their smoke alarms, as the devices need to be replaced at least every 10 years. Smoke alarms don’t last forever. They need to be working properly to help save lives in the event of a home fire.”
To find out how old your smoke alarm is, and its expiration date, simply look on the back of the alarm where the date of manufacture is marked. The smoke alarm should be replaced by the expiration date, or 10 years from the date of manufacture.
Residents who need help testing or installing smoke alarms can request a free home inspection through the Port Moody Home Safety Program, offered by the Fire-Rescue Department. Firefighters will check your home for safety hazards and may replace your battery-operated smoke alarm for free if it’s not working properly.
“Fire Prevention Week reminds us of the importance of fire safety, and the tremendous work of our Fire-Rescue personnel,” said Mayor Mike Clay. “It only takes a few minutes to check your smoke alarms – a few minutes that could save your life. If you have any challenges doing it yourself, Port Moody’s Home Safety Program is a great program where our fire professionals are happy to help.”
