Car-Free Day is back! Join us for music, food, and fun on St. Johns Street Aug. 18 from 12-5

Port Moody’s Car-Free Day returns to St. Johns Street, between Queens and Moody streets, on Sunday, August 18, 2024. Join us for great food, live music, and family-friendly activities between 12 noon and 5pm.
“We are so excited to host Car-Free Day in Port Moody for the first time since 2019!” says Mayor Meghan Lahti. “This event brings the community together, fostering social connections and encouraging us to think about how we can walk, cycle, and use transit more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Special thanks to participating Port Moody businesses, artisans, and non-profit groups, and to our 2024 Car-Free Day partners, TransLink and Tri-City News.”
Car-Free Day will feature:
Food and drink
You’ll find a variety of food and drink options, available from restaurants, cafés, and food trucks. Visitors aged 19+ can purchase a beverage at the Rotary Licensed Family Patio or at one of three licensed patios run by St. Johns Street restaurants.
Performers
Get ready to be entertained! Roving entertainers will be onsite including six-time Canadian yo-yo champion Terrance
Wong. You can also catch performances from: 2023 Tri-Cities Got Talent winner Zaya Philip; 4 Quarter Boulevard, an indie rock group from the Metro Vancouver area; and Sam the Astronaut, an alternative pop duo from Vancouver.
Family-friendly activities
Bring the kids! We’ll have mini golf, a climbing wall, inflatable slide, and Fun GymBus.
Community booths
Get to know the people serving your community! There will be approximately 100 booths presented by local businesses, artisans, and non-profit groups.
City of Port Moody booths
Come and see us at Pop-Up City Hall (blue and white tent with City logo). Port Moody kids aged five to 12 years old can apply for a chance to be mayor for a day in November 2024, in celebration of World Children’s Day.
Port Moody Fire Rescue, Port Moody Police, Port Moody Public Library, and the City’s Environment and Climate Action teams will each have a booth. And our Recreation team will be hosting a youth lounge. Be sure to stop by!
TransLink buses
The TransLink team will be at Car-Free Day with their outreach and historical buses featuring fun interior décor, games, and transit information.
Here are some important notes about this event:
Explore alternative modes of transportation
Car-free days take place across the country and aim to inspire people to get out of their cars, interact with each other, and explore alternative modes of transportation.
There are lots of ways to travel to the celebration: use your own power – go on foot or by bike or hop on a kick scooter or skateboard; choose electric – e-scooter or e-bike; or use public transit. Park your bike for free with The Bicycle Valet, brought to you by TransLink and operated by BEST (Better Environmentally Sound Transportation).
Check TransLink’s Trip Planner for transit routes and schedules. Vehicle parking, available at Westcoast Express Park and Ride (65 Williams Street), will be extremely limited. If you choose to drive, consider carpooling with friends or neighbours who plan to attend, to reduce the number of cars on the road.
Be aware of street closure times and detour
Please note that on August 18, 2024, St. Johns Street, between Douglas and Moody streets, will be closed to all vehicle traffic from 6am to 10pm. For more information, please see our traffic management summary. Commuters and residents living in the area will be directed to use Clarke Street as a detour. On-street parking in the neighbourhood will be extremely limited.
Washrooms, water, and warm weather preparedness
Dress for the weather and use your sun sense if the forecast calls for high temperatures. Wear a hat, use sunscreen, and drink plenty of water. There will be water bottle filling stations, misting stations, and porta potties onsite. Leashed dogs are welcome, but if the weather is expected to be very warm, please leave your dog at home. Streets and sidewalks can quickly heat up to unbearable temperatures and can cause severe burns to a pet’s paw pads.
