Bike share program coming to Port Moody

City Council has given the green light to bike sharing in Port Moody through a non-exclusive, one-year agreement with service provider U-bicycle.

“As a regular cyclist, I know the value of having access to a bike to do short trips and even fill in the ‘last mile’ on longer trips, such as visitors arriving by SkyTrain,” says Mayor Mike Clay. “I’m very excited to see U-bicycle coming to our community for those trips and to help people that might not own their own bike have the opportunity to enjoy riding around the city.”

Similar to the way the City manages food trucks, U-bicycle will operate in Port Moody under a non-exclusive licencing agreement to operate on public land. Thirty-six bicycles will be distributed at various locations along Port Moody’s commercial and recreational corridors. U-bicycle’s fleet must meet safety requirements outlined in the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act, and all bikes must be parked safely adjacent to designated bike racks. All costs associated with the bike share program will be covered by the service provider.

U-bicycle will have its first 26 bikes in place at nine locations in Port Moody in early August, with the remaining 10 bikes expected to arrive in the fall. Visit u-bicycle.ca to learn more about the service and find out how to locate, ride, and park a bike.

Bike sharing is identified in Port Moody’s Master Transportation Plan as a mode share alternative that will provide residents and visitors with another sustainable transportation option.
