Each year, if required, the City of Port Moody holds a municipal tax sale. A tax sale is a public auction of all properties that have not paid their taxes for three years.

Current tax sales

The tax sale takes place annually on the last Monday of September in Council Chambers at 100 Newport Drive.

In 2020, a ministerial order was implemented to allow municipalities the option to defer the 2020 tax sale to 2021 to minimize the financial burden on impacted homeowners during the COVID-19 Pandemic. As such, the City of Port Moody has chosen to implement a Bylaw to extend the 2020 Tax Sale by one year from September 2020 to 2021.

If there are eligible properties, the next tax sale date will be September 27th, 2021 at 10 am.

Bidding starts at the total of all taxes outstanding, penalties, interest, 5% fee, and Land Title fees. The successful purchaser must immediately pay the City by certified payment.

Rules and regulations

The purchase of a tax sale property is subject to tax under the Property Transfer Tax Act on the fair market value of the property at the time of conveyance. For full rules and regulations that govern tax sales in the Province of British Columbia, please see the Local Government Act (Part 16 Division 7) and the Community Charter (section 254).
