Single-use plastics regulations
Previously, the City of Port Moody had a bylaw in place to regulate the distribution of single-use plastic and foam items such as plastic check-out bags, foam containers for prepared food, and plastic drinking straws. To avoid overlap with senior government regulations and simplify compliance, we no longer regulate single-use items.
Announced in July 2023, the B.C. government’s Single-Use and Plastic Waste Prevention Regulation is coming into effect in phases:
- December 20, 2023 – restrictions on food service accessories (e.g. utensils, napkins, straws, cup lids and sleeves)
- July 15, 2024 – restrictions on plastic shopping bags, food service ware (e.g. disposable take-out containers), and oxo-degradable plastics
- July 15, 2024 – minimum fees on alternative shopping bags
- July 1, 2028 – restrictions on PVC film wrap
- July 1, 2030 – restrictions on polystyrene foam meat trays
B.C.’s regulation applies to business operators and food service providers. For more information and resources, visit gov.bc.ca/reuse. If you have a question about enforcement or wish to report non-compliance, email plastics@gov.ca.
The federal government has introduced the Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulations, which prohibit the manufacture, import, and sale of single-use plastic check-out bags, cutlery, food service ware made from or containing problematic plastics, ring carriers, stir sticks, and straws. Single-use plastic flexible straws that are not packaged with beverage containers are excluded from the prohibitions under certain conditions. Visit canada.ca to learn more.
