Film Night | Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem
presented by the Port Moody Film Society
Viviane Amsalem is locked in a loveless marriage and wants a divorce, but according to the law in Israel, only a panel of Rabbis can grant this, and then only when the husband agrees. Her husband, Elisha, stubbornly refuses to give his consent, and Viviane has no alternative other than to persist, over and over, year after year, in the Rabbinical court. The intense, fraught, contentious and absurd journey is captured by the riveting acting, the vivid script, the gimmick-free direction and the emotional pain of each character. Nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film in 2015.
