Art at Council October 10, 2017 - David Carey | Digital Photography

2_Ipad_David CareyDigital photography is the medium of tonight’s Art at Council. The piece, by Port Moody resident David Carey, is titled ipad and is part of his series Old Shacks, New Context. David’s digital creations marries his past work experience as a computer analyst and teacher, and his passion for photography.

David has found that objects take on a whole new meaning when seen in isolation from their original context. He extracted images of shacks from their native surroundings and placed them in photographs in various spots in his condo. Seeing the cabins in their new environment has allowed him to study and reflect on their innate structures and weathered beauty, and really appreciate them as unique works of art.

He hopes that his display of shanty shacks for the Art 4 Life exhibition at the Arts Centre illustrates that creative projects can be great fun, at any age, and that there are no limits on what the mind can come up with.

On a side note - the blue cabin shown in this photograph is a Coal Harbour float home built in the 1930s and was beached between Deep Cove’s Cates Park and the McKenzie Barge shipyard for the past several decades. The cabin is now being refurbished as a floating Artist Residency space.
