The Transit Connect Electric Vehicle
The City of Port Moody City is committing to environmental sustainability by going to full electric with two new, all electric vehicles. . One vehicle will replace our 10 year old bylaw truck and the other will replace a Recreation Services vehicle.
In the Transit Connect electric powered vehicle, an electric motor propels the vehicle, while smart technology manages batteries and recaptures braking energy to recharge the battery pack and increase range.
The lithium-ion batteries allow the Transit Connect Electric to carry 1,000 lbs and achieve a range of 50-80 miles depending on auxiliary usage and drive cycle, and has a top speed of 75 mph. The battery is rechargeable using either a 240-volt or standard 120-volt outlet.
Charging time is 6 to 8 hours with a 240 volt plug-in.
The business case is very clear. The City normally budgets and spends around $7,500 per year for capital , operating, and fuel costs for each vehicle. We expect our costs to be around $5,000 per year with the new electric vehicles for an overall savings of $2500 per year per vehicle
We haven’t calculated the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction but we do know we will be spending around $2,500 less per year in fuel, for each vehicle.
We will be tracking the fuel and emissions savings throughout the life of the vehicle.
