In advance of Fire Prevention Week (October 8 to 14, 2017), Port Moody Fire Rescue is encouraging residents to develop and practice a home escape plan, which identifies two ways out of every room in the house.

“In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape from the time the smoke alarm sounds,” says Port Moody Fire Chief Ron Coulson. “Every second counts – that’s why a home escape plan is so critical. If you practice, your family will be able to respond quickly and safely in the event of a fire. Visit the City’s website to download an easy-to-use planning form. Fill it out, share it with your family, and practice your escape plan twice a year.”

A home escape plan includes working smoke alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom, and near all sleeping areas. It also includes two ways out of every room, usually a door and a window, with a clear path to an outside meeting place (like a tree, light pole, or mailbox) that’s a safe distance from the home. Visit our Home Escape Plan page to download a planning form, and learn more about developing and practicing a home escape plan.

Through education, Fire Prevention Week empowers people to take small steps that can make a big difference by preventing fires and saving lives.
