The Arts and Culture Committee hosted a round-table brainstorming session on Monday, May 31. 50 people were in attendance, representing local artists, cultural organizations and businesses. This two hour session provided the opportunity to brainstorm ideas around what can be done over the next five years to further the City’s vision of being City of the Arts. Over the next few months, members of the Arts and Culture Committee will be meeting one-on-one with various organizations and artists to delve deeper into aspects of the Arts and Culture Master Plan. An open house to view the draft Master Plan will be scheduled in the Fall.

An Arts and Culture Vision was developed through a consultative public process which occurred in October 2000. The vision is rooted in a strong sense of community and the contributing role that arts and culture can play in the social, cultural and economic life of Port Moody. The following is the Port Moody Arts and Culture Vision Statement:

"Our vision is to set Port Moody apart by acknowledging its strong arts and culture base. By coordinating the existing significant cultural resources and supporting the development of cultural precincts in Moody Centre and Inlet Centre, Port Moody will uniquely position itself in the region and will stand out from other communities as a “City of the Arts”."

The Cultural Strategic Plan answers the questions, “where do we go from here?” and “how do we get there?” The plan includes a set of 3 Strategic Directions:

· Integrate the arts into everyday life
· Contribute to the economic life of Port Moody
· Build on our strengths

Each one of these Strategic Directions has a set of detailed and measurable actions to be achieved over the coming years. The plan presents an achievable set of initiatives enabling the development of arts and culture in Port Moody and spurring its contribution to economic development.

The City of the Arts Cultural Master Plan resident survey is now closed.
