Set in Germany and France in the immediate aftermath of the First World War (1914-1918) this adaptation by French director François Ozon of Ernst Lubitsch’s 1932 antiwar film Broken Lullaby tells the story of a young German woman grieving the loss of her fiancé, Frantz. She discovers a French veteran visiting her fiancé’s grave who claims to have been a friend of the fallen soldier. Frantz swings the audience constantly between hope and despair for its characters thanks to a combination of winning performances, clever plotting, and stunning visuals.
