Film Night | The Florida Project
presented by the Port Moody Film Society
The film tells the story of a precocious six year-old, Moonee, and her ragtag group of friends who live on the commercial strip catering to Disney World tourists outside Orlando, Florida. This is an unmagical kingdom, a zone of tawdriness and transience, of strip clubs and strip malls, knockoff souvenir shops and soft-serve ice cream shacks; but summer break for the kids is filled with childhood wonder, possibility and a sense of adventure, while the adults around them struggle with hard times. We experience vicarious delight in the kids’ capers, but are simultaneously conscious of the possible consequences, and of the grim circumstances that grant these children their freedom. The Florida Project is one of the most effective, honest portraits of childhood you’ll ever see, and a touching, poignant snapshot of American life in 2017.
