Dissatisfied with poor working conditions, the women and the shop steward Rita O’Grady (Sally Hawkins), work with union rep Albert Passingham (Bob Hoskins) for a better deal. After learning that women are paid a fraction of men’s wages for the same work O’Grady leads a strike for equal pay for equal work.
