1. When is the election?

8 am to 8 pm

4. Can I vote at any location?
Yes

5. Is there a mail-in ballot?
Yes - please see question #8.

6. Will you be providing mobile voting for those who can’t get to the polls?
No. Voters who cannot get to the polls will have the opportunity to vote by mail ballot. We will be working with facilities who have requested mobile polls in the past to arrange for the delivery and collection of mail ballots for voters in those facilities.

Advance voting

7. Can I vote in advance?
Yes, any qualified elector can vote at one of the two advance voting opportunities.

  • When: Wednesday, September 20, 2017 and Saturday, September 23, 2017
  • Where: Conference Room, Port Moody Recreation Complex, 300 Ioco Road
  • Time: 8 am to 8 pm

Note: If you are not on the list of registered electors, you may register at time of voting with 2 documents that provide evidence of your identity and place of residence, at least one of which must include your signature.  Examples of acceptable forms of IDs include:

  • BC Driver's Licence
  • BC ID Card issued by the Motor Vehicle Branch
  • Owner's Certificate of Insurance and Vehicle Licence issued by ICBC
  • BC CareCard or BC Gold CareCard
  • BC Services Card
  • Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation Form HR81
  • Social Insurance Card issued by Human Resources Development Canada
  • Birth Certificate
  • Citizenship Card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada
  • Canadian Passport
  • Real property tax notice
  • Credit card or debit card (must include name) issued by a savings institution

Mail-in Ballot

8. If I can’t vote at the advance voting or on election day, can I vote?
Yes, we have mail in ballot voting.

Voting by mail is available for electors:

  • with a physical disability, illness, or injury that affects their ability to vote at another voting opportunity, and
  • who expect to be absent from Port Moody on all Advance Voting Days and General Voting Day.

In order to vote by mail ballot, you must submit the following information to the City of Port Moody Legislative Services office:

  • Full name,
  • Residential address,
  • Address of the property in relation to which you are voting (for non-resident property electors),
  • Method of delivery of your mail ballot package: 
    - pick up at Port Moody City Hall, OR 
    - regular letter mail through Canada Post to residential address, OR 
    - regular letter mail through Canada Post to an alternate address that you provide when requesting the ballot package.

If you are not on the list of electors, you must indicate whether you are going to be registering as a resident or non-resident property elector to ensure you receive the correct registration application form in your package.

Your mail ballot must be received by the Chief Election Officer no later than 8 pm on September 30, 2017.

We will be promoting the availability of mail ballot voting through extending business hours on certain days in September to facilitate the pick-up and drop-off of mail ballots. More information is available on the election home page.

9. Why doesn’t the City hold the advance voting opportunities earlier?
Mail Balloting will be available as soon as the ballots are printed and delivered to our office. Electors can pick-up and drop-off mail ballots during our regular and extended office hours in September. These hours are even more flexible than additional advance voting opportunities.

10. Must I be a Canadian Citizen to vote?
Yes

11. What are the qualifications to vote?
You can qualify as a resident elector or non-resident property elector:

Resident elector, at time of voting, must:

  • be 18 years or older
  • be a Canadian Citizen
  • be a resident of BC for at least 6 months (April 1, 2017)
  • be a resident of electoral area (Port Moody) for 30 days
  • not be disqualified by law

Non-Resident Property Elector, at time of voting, must:

  • be 18 years or older
  • be a Canadian Citizen
  • be a resident of BC for at least 6 months (April 1, 2017)
  • be a registered owner of property in Port Moody for 30 days immediately before the day of registration
  • not be eligible to register as a resident elector in Port Moody
  • not be disqualified by law
  • only register in relation to one piece of property

12. I own property in Port Moody but don’t live there, can I register to vote on voting day?
Yes, you can register as a Non-Resident Property Owner. Forms can be obtained from City Hall at Legislative Services. To register you must provide:

  • Proof of ownership (ie: tax bill or title search)
  • Two pieces of identification, at least one of which must contain your signature
  • If applicable, written consent from the majority of the property owners (including the signature of the person registering to vote)

13. If I own property in addition to my residence can I vote twice?
No, you may only vote once.

14. How is “residency” determined for the purposes of voting?
Your usual place of residence must be in the City of Port Moody.

15. Am I on the List of Electors?
The City of Port Moody uses the most current available list from the Province. If not on the List of Registered Electors, any qualified elector can register at the time of voting.

16. Can I register in advance if my name is not on the List of Electors?
No, there will be no advance registration. You may register at time of voting if you qualify to vote as a resident elector or non-resident property elector.

Note: 2 pieces of identification, at least one with a signature are required to prove residency at time of registration.

17. Do candidates have to live in Port Moody?
No

18. What are the requirements to be a candidate? Candidates must, by voting day:

  • be 18 years or older
  • be a Canadian citizen
  • be a resident of BC for at least 6 months (April 1, 2017)
  • not be disqualified by law

19. How do I become a candidate?
Nomination packages will be available from Tuesday, August 1, 2017 for pick up at the Legislative Services Counter, Main Floor, City Hall, 100 Newport Drive.

Nomination papers must be filed with the Chief Election Officer at City Hall between 9:00 am Tuesday, August 15th 2017 and 4:00 pm Friday, August 25, 2017.

20. How do I find out who the candidates are?
Candidate nomination papers will be posted on this site as they are received between August 15, 2017 and August 25, 2017.

21. Is there an election advertising “blackout” period on Saturday, September 30th?
Newspaper, magazine, radio or television advertising on election day is prohibited. This applies to ads to promote or oppose a candidate, an elector organization, or a particular outcome in other voting. Please also be reminded that there is a prohibition against campaigning or campaign signs/literature within 100 metres of voting places on voting day.
