Building an awareness and understanding of bears and bear behavior in the City can reduce fear and increase the community’s capacity to co-exist safely and respectfully with bears. Each spring the City hosts an annual Bear Essentials Seminar which provides an opportunity for residents to learn about bear behaviour and what they can do to be bear smart from a variety of professionals and expert speakers. Notifications on upcoming seminars are posted on the City’s website, its social media networks, its annual calendar, and the Tri-City News.

This year’s Bear Essential seminar will take place on April 12, 2017, at 7pm in the Inlet Theatre. This year’s free seminar marks the return of bear expert Tom Saare, Chair of the North Shore Black Bear Society, instructor at the BCIT Fish, Wildlife and Recreation Program, and member of the International Association for Bear Research and Management.
Tom will share practical tips for effectively managing bear attractants, responding to bear encounters safely and appropriately, and much more.
